Pandemic Changes in the Plan Review Process

When the pandemic hit and in its aftermath, iPlanTables observed a significant shift in how clients approached the plan review process. Hygiene concerns led to a desire to minimize physical contact with paper in the workplace. This prompted a closer examination of how often a printed plan sheet was handled. It started when a customer or resident submitted a paper set of plans. The process continued as the plans were handled within the plan review system.

This shift highlighted the need for a more efficient, touch-free, and digital alternative to traditional paper-based workflows.

Plan Review Process Before the Pandemic

Traditionally, paper was the most widely accepted way to review construction plans and specifications. Many organizations printed documents in-house on 11×17 copy paper, while others relied on local reprographics companies to produce wide-format prints. Storage rooms filled with rolls of paper plan sets and half-size prints were often challenging to read. After all, if half-size documents are complex to view, why settle for half-size monitors during the plan review process?

The pandemic brought significant changes to how the plan review process was managed. With many employees working from limited spaces at home, handling paper documents became increasingly impractical. Adjusted work hours and restrictions prevented individuals from dropping off paper plan sets at municipal offices for review. This forced a shift from traditional paper-based site plan reviews to a more efficient and accessible digital plan review.

Now, as we adapt to the post-pandemic “new normal,” organizations are transitioning toward digital solutions, moving away from paper-based workflows. While this change is not without its challenges, it aligns with the fast-paced digitalization of our world, making the plan review process more streamlined and future-ready.

Streamline Construction Plan Review with iPlanTables Workstations

Enhance your plan review process with the power of an iPlanTables wide-format 4K touchscreen monitor. Imagine viewing your construction plan drawings in stunning detail on a wide-format monitor. At the same time, flip a side monitor to portrait mode to seamlessly reference building codes, spec sheets, or emails. This eliminates unrolling cumbersome paper plan sets or flip-through pages. Instead, request a digital file from your customer or resident, efficiently streamlining your workflow.

At iPlanTables, we’ve redefined the plan review process by emphasizing the plan sheet as the core source of intelligence for any project. With an iPlanTables workstation, you can effortlessly capture the big picture of your project while diving into the minor details of every plan sheet.
